County Councilwoman Karen Toles (D-7)

District 7 Councilwoman Karen Toles, who was stopped on Monday after going over 100 mph on Suitland Parkway, today responded to charges of reckless driving. In an announcement from the County Council Office of Communications, Toles released the following personal statement:

As I stated earlier, I believe moving violations are serious matters. I take full responsibility for my actions and I apologize to my constituents, my County Council colleagues, and Prince George’s County.  In addition to paying the appropriate fine, I will not be driving a county owned vehicle until voluntarily completing a driver improvement course to ensure my safety and the safety of others.

– Prince George’s County Council Member Karen R. Toles

Toles was stopped by Prince George’s County Police on Monday after an officer clocked her going over 100mph in a 55mph zone. After initially not stopping and leading police past multiple intersections, Toles is reported to have become argumentative. Some citizens are complaining the $90 fine she received for an illegal lane change amounted to special treatment. The normal fine for going 50mph over the speed limit is $500 and five points on the drivers driving license. Other citizens have called for all members of the County Council to be stripped of their county issued vehicles.

The Prince George’s County Police Department announced a senior level panel of officers will review the stop.

News also broke today that this was not the first traffic stop for the councilwoman. According to court records, Toles has been stopped at least 5 times in the last three years for traffic violations.

None of Councilwoman Toles’ colleagues has commented on the traffic stop.

  1. Point 1: Notice how she has changed her statement from paying “the appropriate fine” to simply paying “the fine”. What was assessed and what is appropriate are two different things. She got off because of her status. Point 2: She needs to realize she has no status! Self important politicians are a dime a dozen in DC – get real lady. Point 3: The county is stupid. She was is a county vehicle when she comitted these crimes, and yes they were crimes. She got off essentially Scott free ($90 fine is a joke). The next time she does this and kills somebody that victim’s family needs to go after the county for not have taken any previous actions to reprimand and rectify her poor decision making (which is well known at this point). Point 4: Any of you reading this would have been face down in the concrete if you were in her shoes. Reach out to the PD and the county and let them know how that makes you feel. Point 5: Makes you wonder when looking over the county job site why they don’t list ‘get out of jail free cards’ as a benefit of employment. This whole situation is laughable.
