Most of the time when you read that a key figure in the cabinet of Superintendent Dr. Hite might be on their way out it means for a bad reason. It might mean they are being forced out, but that is not the case for his chief deputy Dr. Bonita Coleman-Potter. Appointed to her post as second in command in 2009, Dr. Coleman-Potter is one of the leading semifinalist to be the next chief of the Atlanta Public Schools per a statement from the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education earlier today.
If appointed Dr. Potter would succeed Dr. Beverly Hall who has led the system for more than a decade. Hall announced her retirement last year after a cheating scandal which engulfed more than 2/3rds of the schools in the district and got 109 educators referred for further investigation.
The Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education is expected to make a final decision soon said chairman Khaatim Sherrer El who himself is under intense pressure from community leaders including Mayor Kasim Reed to step down. The candidates will be subject to more interviews and meetings with the community before a final decision is made.
