County Councilwoman Karen Toles (D-7)

District 7 Councilwoman Karen Toles, who was stopped on Monday after going over 100 mph on Suitland Parkway, today responded to charges of reckless driving. In an announcement from the County Council Office of Communications, Toles released the following personal statement:

As I stated earlier, I believe moving violations are serious matters. I take full responsibility for my actions and I apologize to my constituents, my County Council colleagues, and Prince George’s County.  In addition to paying the appropriate fine, I will not be driving a county owned vehicle until voluntarily completing a driver improvement course to ensure my safety and the safety of others.

- Prince George’s County Council Member Karen R. Toles

Toles was stopped by Prince George’s County Police on Monday after an officer clocked her going over 100mph in a 55mph zone. After initially not stopping and leading police past multiple intersections, Toles is reported to have become argumentative. Some citizens are complaining the $90 fine she received for an illegal lane change amounted to special treatment. The normal fine for going 50mph over the speed limit is $500 and five points on the drivers driving license. Other citizens have called for all members of the County Council to be stripped of their county issued vehicles.

The Prince George’s County Police Department announced a senior level panel of officers will review the stop.

News also broke today that this was not the first traffic stop for the councilwoman. According to court records, Toles has been stopped at least 5 times in the last three years for traffic violations.

None of Councilwoman Toles’ colleagues has commented on the traffic stop.
